How SEF grants make a difference - in the words of SCSD teachers

Samantha Brimeyer, Kindergarten teacher I received my SEF grant for Osmo kits in the fall of 2016. The grant definitely had a positive impact and allowed for my students to participate in a math technology rotation more regularly over the years. Prior to receiving the Osmos, my students weren’t participating in any math technology during our math block time. My students (and I) both loved the Osmo kits, and in the spring of 2017 I wrote a purchase request to the Lakeview PTO to request a few more Osmo kits so my classroom could have a “complete” rotation of Osmos. For example, 6-7 students could all be playing Osmo Numbers or Tangrams independently at the same time as part of their math rotation (instead of just 3-4 using the Osmo at a time or having to work in pairs). My students always enjoy using the Osmos and look forward to when they get to use them. It’s always a favorite activity during our math block. The Osmos are still in my classroom, and they are being used this year for our math technology rotation.
Laurie Stinocher, Begindergarten teacher
I am constantly reminded of the benefits of the SEP grant I received in 2017 for the mobile center easel! The easel is still in my Begindergarten classroom and in constant use throughout the day by both my students and myself. The mobile easel is the focal point of our class meeting area and is used for instruction in every curricular area. It is instrumental for Big Book Literacy lessons of: concepts of print, phonological awareness, and fluency. I use it for Phonics Lessons with magnetic letters to build words and word families. The children love to come up and be “the teacher” as they manipulate the materials on the easel to teach the class new words. The easel holds chart paper which allows me to teach writing concepts from the Lucy Calkins Units of Study lessons. The students and I are able to construct stories together using the easel dry erase board as well as chart paper. Guest Readers and I use it to focus on key concepts during Interactive Read Alouds. The easel is perfect for large and small group work with math concepts. The magnetic board allows the children to manipulate magnets as they build concepts of ten, addition, subtraction, etc.. The dry erase component of the board is invaluable as new thoughts can be constructed and reworked with the use of a dry erase marker and swipe of an eraser. The students know that the Begindergarten classroom is their room to explore and use to learn! They continually use the easel to learn in all of the activities listed above during their independent rotations. Thank you again for funding this very beneficial tool!
